All the Red Flags in Marques Houston & His Teenage Brideâs Broken Marriage
In July 2023, the internet was buzzing about R&B singer and actor Marques Houstonâs controversial marriage to his much younger bride, Miya Dickey.
At first, many tried to give Houston the benefit of the doubt, but as more details have emerged, the red flags in their relationship have become impossible to ignore.
Marques Houston rose to fame as a child star, joining the group Immature at age 11 and later acting on “Sister, Sister.” He endured tragedy early on, losing his mother at 16, and has admitted to struggling with âmommy issuesâ throughout his life.
This unresolved trauma seemed to set the stage for his future relationships, as he openly searched for someone to fill the void left by his motherâs passing.
Fast forward to 2018: Houston, then 37, met Miya Dickey, who was just 17 at the time, through mutual friends in the Jehovahâs Witness community.
Houston claims they didnât start dating until Miya turned 18, but their relationship moved at lightning speed. Just 13 days after her 18th birthday, they went public on Instagram, and within five months, Houston proposed. The couple married in August 2020, when Miya was 19 and Houston was 39.
Many observers were troubled by the significant age difference and the timing of their relationship. Critics pointed out that Miya had a difficult upbringing, was raised by her grandparents, and was reportedly introduced to the Jehovahâs Witness faith as a vulnerable teenager.
Some even speculated online that Miya matched the profile of a missing teenager from Oregon, adding another layer of concern. Houston denied any wrongdoing, but his vague responses only fueled suspicions.
Houstonâs own words added to the controversy. In a 2023 interview, he defended marrying a teenager by saying women his age had âtoo much baggage,â and that he wanted someone he could take care of.
He also admitted that Miya reminded him of his late motherâa statement that many found deeply unsettling.
Despite Houstonâs insistence that their relationship was built on faith and mutual respect, the coupleâs dynamic raised questions about control and independence.
Miya, who was still figuring out her identity, suddenly found herself thrust into marriage, motherhood, and public scrutiny. Observers noted that she seemed to spend all her time with Houston, rarely apartâa potential sign of control or insecurity.
As time went on, cracks began to show. Miya started posting more on social media, often without her wedding ring and away from Houston and his close-knit circle.
Some speculated she was finally breaking free from what many believed was a controlling relationship.
From the start, the age gap, the speed of the relationship, and the power imbalance were all glaring red flags. Miya was just beginning adulthood, while Houston had already lived a full life. Now, as their paths seem to be diverging, many wonder if a divorce announcement is imminent.
Was this ever true love, or just a teenager caught in a grown manâs fantasy? The world is watching, and the red flags are hard to ignore.
