What Really Happened to Jane Kilcher from *Alaska: The Last Frontier?
*Alaska: The Last Frontier*, premiered on December 29, 2011, on the Discovery Channel, stands out as a premier family-themed reality TV show. Spanning over 10 seasons, it chronicles four generations of the Kilcher family living outside Homer, Alaska.
The series showcases their self-sufficient lifestyle in the harsh Alaskan wilderness, where survival isn’t a competition for prizes but a daily battle against nature’s unforgiving elements. Among the cast is Jane Kilcher, known through her husband, Atz Lee Kilcher.
Recently, she’s made headlines for confronting internet trolls, alongside other personal and family challenges. Let’s delve into what has happened to her.
Born Christina Jane Ferman on September 14, 1974, in Alaska to Bob and Sarah Ferman, Jane grew up in Anchorage with siblings Jessica and Bobby until age 12, when her family moved to Homer.
Living just 11 miles from the Kilcher Homestead, she met Atz Lee. Both had previous marriages—Jane to Dicran Kassouni, with whom she has a daughter, Piper (born 2003), and Atz Lee to Nantia Krisintu, with a son, Etienne (born 2001). After their respective marriages ended, Jane and Atz Lee found love and married in 2006 at the head of the bay in Homer.
The Kilcher family’s story began with Atz Lee’s grandparents, Yule and Ruth, who settled on a 160-acre plot 12 miles from Homer. They built a one-room cabin, expanded it over time, and raised eight children, including Atz and Otto, through homesteading.
Isolated from public schools, the children were homeschooled, learning to farm, hunt, and preserve food to survive sub-zero winters. Yule, a former senator, and Ruth divorced in 1969, but the homestead grew to 600 acres, protected by a conservation easement in the 1990s under the Kilcher Family Trust to remain intact for future generations.
Jane joined *Alaska: The Last Frontier* as part of this legacy, facing the same brutal winters—lasting eight months—that demand preparation and respect for nature. However, beyond physical challenges, she’s battled online harassment.
In 2018, Jane took to Facebook to address cruel comments from internet trolls about her weight, looks, character, and marriage. “I’m a size 8 and I get called fat,” she wrote, urging fans to shut down negativity.
She and Atz Lee also shield their children from the show to protect their privacy, frustrated by the hate directed at their family despite opening their lives to viewers.
Further turmoil struck in 2015 when Atz Lee suffered a near-fatal fall off a cliff while hiking in Otter Cove Resort, Katchemak Bay. Medevacked to a hospital, he sustained severe injuries, including broken bones, crushed ribs, and punctured lungs. Jane shared the ordeal on social media, noting the long recovery ahead.
During his absence, she doubled her efforts at the homestead. Additionally, in 2014, the couple faced legal issues over an illegal helicopter-assisted bear hunt for the show, though charges were dismissed in 2016 after they testified against the production company, which was fined $17,500.
Now, with Atz Lee recovered and a new season slated for October, Jane continues to stand strong against adversity—both in the wilderness and online—proving her resilience as a key member of the Kilcher family.
