Nicole Wray Finally Reveals Why She Can’t Stand Missy Elliott**
Nicole Wray’s journey in the music industry began with immense promise. Born in California and raised in Virginia, Nicole grew up singing in church, developing her vocal talent from a young age.
Her big break came when her brother introduced her to Missy Elliott, who was so impressed by Nicole’s voice that she promised to sign her as soon as she started her own label. True to her word, Missy signed Nicole to The Goldmind Inc. and featured her on Missy’s debut album, giving Nicole her first taste of the spotlight.
Nicole’s debut single, “Make It Hot,” produced by Timbaland and written by Missy, became a massive hit in 1998. The song’s success put Nicole on the map, and her debut album followed soon after. However, despite the hit single, the album itself didn’t achieve the expected commercial success. Nicole began to feel lost as a new artist, unsure of her direction and whether those around her still believed in her potential.
As she worked on her sophomore album, Nicole started writing her own songs, taking more control over her music. Yet, she felt a growing lack of support from Missy and the label.
The excitement and attention she once received faded, especially as Missy’s own career soared and the label began focusing on new artists. Nicole’s second album, “Electric Blue,” was recorded but never released. Feeling sidelined and unsupported, Nicole made the difficult decision to leave Missy’s label—not because she was dropped, but because she felt she had no other choice if she wanted to move forward.
Nicole’s departure marked the cooling of her once-close relationship with Missy. She described it as being like a mother with too many children—not all get the attention they deserve. Although Nicole was grateful for the opportunities Missy gave her, she couldn’t ignore the disappointment of feeling abandoned when she needed support the most.
After leaving The Goldmind Inc., Nicole signed with Roc-A-Fella Records, becoming their first female R&B artist before stars like Rihanna. However, just as things were looking up, Roc-A-Fella split, and her album was shelved.
Nicole found herself back at square one, struggling to keep her music career alive amid industry setbacks and personal struggles, including her father’s addiction.
Despite these obstacles, Nicole never gave up. She found new opportunities, collaborating with The Black Keys and later reinventing herself as Lady Wray. She continued to write and release music, eventually signing with a major publishing company and seeing her songs featured on TV shows. Nicole’s resilience helped her overcome the disappointments of the past.
Reflecting on her journey, Nicole has openly shared that while she still has love for Missy, their friendship and working relationship were never the same after she left the label. She felt creatively stifled and unsupported, which led to her decision to walk away. Nicole’s story is one of perseverance, self-discovery, and the importance of taking control of your own destiny—even if it means leaving behind those who once gave you your start.
