Black Girl Tells Stephen Curry She’s Hungry. What He Did Next Left Everyone in Shock!
During a book signing event in Oakland, NBA star Stephen Curry encountered a moment that would change not only one girl’s life, but an entire community. Among the crowd was 12-year-old Jasmine Taylor, who waited for hours with her grandmother Gloria.
When Jasmine finally reached Curry, her simple, honest words—“I’m hungry”—stopped him in his tracks.
Jasmine’s confession was more than a passing comment. She hadn’t eaten since yesterday’s school lunch, and her grandmother, a hospital cleaner raising three grandchildren after her daughter’s passing, struggled to provide.
Curry, deeply moved, paused the event and asked his assistant to get the family’s contact information.
Instead of letting the moment pass, Curry invited Jasmine and Gloria to lunch with him and his wife, Ayesha. There, Curry listened as Jasmine explained her struggles—her hunger, her declining grades, and her wish for just one day without worry.
Gloria shared how she worked extra shifts to keep food on the table and how Jasmine’s birthday had passed without a gift.
Curry realized Jasmine’s story was not unique. Through his Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, he had heard of many children facing food insecurity. But Jasmine’s honesty inspired him to act immediately.
He invited the family to visit his foundation the next day, asking Gloria to bring Jasmine’s younger brothers along.
That Sunday, Curry personally picked up the Taylor family and took them to Prescott Elementary, Jasmine’s school. There, he introduced them to school staff and foundation members.
Curry announced a new partnership: Prescott would become the pilot site for a program providing daily nutritious meals, after-school tutoring, sports programs, and a food pantry for families in need. Gloria would also receive job training through the foundation.
Jasmine’s courage to speak up became the catalyst for change. The program, initially focused on her school, soon expanded. Six months later, Curry, joined by city officials and Warriors teammates, announced the “Jasmine Program” would serve thousands of students across East Oakland.
Jasmine’s family thrived—Gloria completed job training and became a community coordinator, her brothers excelled in school, and Jasmine herself became captain of her basketball team and a top student.
At the launch event, Jasmine took the stage, sharing how her hunger was not just for food, but for hope and opportunity. She thanked Curry for listening and transforming her moment of shame into a movement that restored dignity to her community.
Jasmine’s story spread. Other athletes and organizations reached out to replicate the model.
For Curry, the experience became one of the most meaningful of his career. He reminded Jasmine—and everyone—that sometimes the simplest truths can spark the biggest changes.
From one girl’s honest words, “I’m hungry,” a wave of compassion and action grew, proving that when we speak our truths, we can help create a better future for all.
