Whoopi Goldberg Trolls Meghan Markle’s Royal Title Drama: “Wake Me Up When You’re Done”

Whoopi Goldberg made it clear that she’s not losing sleep over the latest drama involving Meghan Markle and her royal titles.

On the April 30 episode of “The View,” the Oscar-winning actress and talk show host took a lighthearted jab at the ongoing conversation about Meghan still using her “HRH” (Her Royal Highness) title in private, despite stepping away from official royal duties years ago.

The discussion began during the show’s popular “Hot Topics” segment, when co-host Sunny Hostin brought up the recent reports that Meghan Markle had signed a personal gift to a friend with her HRH title.

The news quickly stirred up debate online and in the media, with some royal watchers questioning whether Meghan should still be using the title after she and Prince Harry stepped down from their roles as senior working royals in 2020 and relocated to the United States.

As Sunny started to explain the situation and share her perspective, Whoopi couldn’t resist making her feelings known. With her signature wit, she quipped, “Wake me up when you’re done,” drawing laughter from the audience and the other panelists.

Whoopi’s sarcastic remark made it clear that, in her opinion, the whole controversy was overblown and not worth the level of attention it was receiving.

Whoopi then briefly recapped the backstory for viewers, noting that Meghan’s use of “HRH” on a private gift had raised some eyebrows. She pointed out that, technically, both Meghan and Harry retain their HRH titles, but as part of their agreement with the late Queen Elizabeth II, they agreed not to use them in an official or public capacity.

The distinction between private and public use, however, seems to have blurred in the eyes of some critics.

Sunny Hostin, for her part, argued that Meghan hadn’t actually broken any rules. She said that Meghan appeared to be following the terms of her exit agreement with the royal family, as the use of the HRH title was in a private context and not for any commercial or public purpose.

Sunny’s take was that the situation was being blown out of proportion by people looking for reasons to criticize Meghan.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, however, admitted that she found the whole situation “a little bit cringe.” She suggested that, while Meghan may not have technically violated any agreements, the optics of using a royal title in any context after stepping back from royal duties could understandably rub some people the wrong way.

Despite the differing opinions among the panelists, Whoopi’s dismissive attitude toward the controversy set the tone for the segment. She made it clear that, with so many more pressing issues in the world, the debate over Meghan’s use of her HRH title was hardly worth losing sleep over.

In the end, the segment highlighted how polarizing Meghan Markle remains in the public eye—and how even the smallest actions can spark big conversations. But as far as Whoopi Goldberg is concerned, this royal drama is one she can sleep through.
