Whoopi Goldberg Has Full-Body Reaction to ‘SNL’ Star’s Crack About J.D. Vance

As one of Saturday Night Live‘s most popular current cast members, it was no surprise when Bowen Yang sent the hosts of The View into hysterics during his recent appearance on the talk show — but Whoopi Goldberg still seemed unprepared.

When Yang sat down for a chat with Goldberg and her co-hosts on the Thursday, April 24 episode of The View to promote his new movie The Wedding BanquetSara Haines asked the comedian about his portrayal of J.D. Vance on SNL.

As Yang explained, he was hesitant to take the role at first.

“I just thought there would be better people for it,” he said, per Entertainment Weekly. “It was my impostor syndrome, I was like, there are better people than this. I worked with an accent coach, I had to get it between Ohio and Appalachia with the accent. It’s hard, it’s very subtle!”

After Goldberg told Yang “it was funny as hell,” his response nearly made the Sister Act star fall off her chair.

“Thank you, I mean, look, the guy’s a pope killer, okay?” he joked. (Pope Francis died just hours after meeting with the Vice President.)

Goldberg doubled over in her chair, seemingly unable to speak.

“There’s our new headline!” Haines interjected, before Goldberg snapped back to attention.

“Somebody had to say it!” she said.

“He doesn’t mean it literally,” Joy Behar assured the audience, with Sunny Hostin agreeing, “It’s just comedy!”

During the same interview, Yang also addressed the ongoing gossip about him leaving SNL after Season 50, explaining that the rumors started after he said he would leave “at some point.”

“I will not be leaving anytime soon,” he said.
