Whoopi Goldberg Defends ‘Love Is Blind’ Groom Who Got Dumped At The Altar Over His Conservative Politics: “It Did Feel Cruel”
‘The View’ / ‘Love is Blind’
Whoopi Goldberg is defending Love is Blind star Ben Mezzenga, whose ex-fiancée Sara Carton called off their engagement at the altar over his conservative politics.
On this morning’s episode of The View, the co-hosts weighed in on the viral moment from the Netflix show’s eighth season, during which Carton claims Mezzenga is not on the same “wavelength” as her when it comes to Black Lives Matter and the LGBTQ+ community.
Sunny Hostin agreed with her decision, saying, “You can’t marry somebody like that,” while Joy Behar joked, “You need somebody informed otherwise you might as well marry Marjorie Taylor Greene.”
Goldberg, however, had a different take on the situation.
“But then why wait? Why do it in front of [everyone]?” she asked, referring to Carton’s decision to end their relationship after she had already walked down the aisle.
“I think what bothered me when I saw the clip is not that he, you know — there’s a lot of people who politics is not their thing. It’s just not their thing,” Goldberg said, before adding, “But to wait until the wedding day…”
Sara Haines tried to explain that “they’re forced to do it that way” as that’s “the setup of the show.” However, Alyssa Farah Griffin agreed with Goldberg that it still felt “a little cruel.”
“It did feel cruel because she could’ve said, ‘No, I’m not gonna marry you and here’s why.’ And they could’ve had the fight there,” Goldberg said. “But they did it in so public a way.”
When Behar joked that “uninformed women” would be calling Mezzenga up now that he’s single, Goldberg added, “No, I’m not worried about him but I don’t like seeing folks get embarrassed like that.”
But, to Behar, anyone willing to sign up for a show like Love is Blind is “asking for trouble.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC. Love is Blind Seasons 1 through 8 are now streaming on Netflix.
