Whoopi Goldberg teased her View co-host Sunny Hostin for speaking out in favor of diversity, inclusion, and equity during a particularly spirited debate about feminism on the show.
Goldberg raised the topic at the start of Tuesday’s (May 6) episode by asking her co-hosts why singer Gloria Gaynor refuses to identify as a feminist despite the fact that many consider her hit song “I Will Survive” to be a “feminist anthem.”
While Sara Haines pointed out that there is “a common misconception that … feminism means you hate men,” Hostin tied it back to the larger push back against diversity and equity that we are seeing from the White House.
She pointed out that supporting equality is now viewed as “a bad thing,” prompting Goldberg to playfully tease her co-host.
“Oh, you’re so woke!” Goldberg joked, prompting a laugh from their co-hosts and audience.
Hostin didn’t miss a beat as she fired back, “I’m just too woke, Whoopi!”
She continued, “The bottom line is you can be someone that supports women having equal rights, and Black people having rights, and people that are disabled having equal rights and people in the LGBTQ community having equal rights and still love a man!”
Haines and Alyssa Farah Griffin also went back and forth when Griffin claimed she also doesn’t identify as a feminist.
“I think that it becomes this sort of loaded term that people may interpret in different ways, like you’re burning your bra or you hate men,” Griffin explained, later adding, “I feel that way, like I’m probably a feminist but I don’t say I am because I’m sure there’s something maybe I don’t [agree with].”
Haines immediately pushed back, telling Griffin, “You’re absolutely a feminist. I’m confirming that for you.”
As Griffin continued speculating whether she checks all the boxes of a feminist, Haines maintained, “No you check all the boxes, you’re good. No one’s asking for the bra sacrifice.”
