**What Happened to Rah Digga? Leaving Flipmode Squad, Her Shelved Second Album & Rumored Beef With Busta Rhymes**
Rah Digga, born Rashia Fisher, is a respected rapper, writer, actress, and activist best known as a longtime member of Busta Rhymes’ Flipmode Squad.
Though celebrated as one of hip-hop’s most prominent female MCs, her journey has been marked by both professional struggles and personal challenges.
Growing up in Newark, New Jersey, Rah Digga was raised by parents who instilled in her a deep appreciation for music and its messages. Inspired by fellow Jersey native Queen Latifah, she realized that a career in hip-hop was possible for someone like her, not just New Yorkers.
She began rapping at nine, became serious at eleven, and excelled academically, graduating as salutatorian from a Baltimore private school. She even earned a full scholarship to MIT, but chose to pursue music instead.
Rah Digga honed her rap skills by studying legends like KRS-One, Rakim, and Kool G Rap, while her writing style was influenced by Roxanne Shanté. Her first professional break came with the New York/New Jersey crew Flavor Unit, where she performed under the name “Rah Diggity.”
Teaming up with another female rapper, they formed Twice the Flavor, but the duo didn’t last. Rah Digga preferred being around male rappers, which led her to join the Outsidaz, an East Coast hip-hop collective.
Her appearance on the Fugees’ “Cowboys” track from their multi-platinum album *The Score* brought her attention, though she didn’t receive publishing royalties—only writing credits. Nevertheless, this exposure helped her land a record deal.
Rah Digga’s next big move was joining Flipmode Squad, after being noticed by Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest while performing eight months pregnant at a Lyricist Lounge showcase. Initially, she signed a production deal with Q-Tip, but due to his personal and professional upheavals, she eventually signed with Elektra Records.
Her debut solo album, *Dirty Harriet*, dropped in 2000, with its title referencing Harriet Tubman and symbolizing her leadership in bringing underground artists to the mainstream.
In 2001, Rah Digga made her acting debut in the film *13 Ghosts* and later appeared alongside Beyoncé in MTV’s *Carmen: A Hip Hopera*. Around this time, tensions grew between Busta Rhymes and Elektra, prompting both to leave the label, taking their recorded masters to J Records.
Rah Digga’s second album, *Everything Is a Story*, was slated for a 2004 release but was shelved due to label drama—J Records dropped Busta and his associates after learning he was negotiating with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath.
By 2007, Rah Digga left Flipmode Squad, citing a lack of progress with her music career, but she insists there was never any beef with Busta or the group.
Returning to Newark, she dedicated herself to music and community work, mentoring at-risk youth and founding the Feed Me Foundation (which provides meals for the homeless) and Lyrics Matter LLC (teaching music and entrepreneurship).
Rah Digga finally released her second album, *Classic*, in 2010, though it didn’t achieve the commercial success of her debut. Since then, she’s released music independently and raised her daughter with rapper Young Zee, crediting motherhood as her main motivation.
Recently, Rah Digga returned to acting, starring in the upcoming film *Stars*, and co-hosts the *Yanadameen Godcast* podcast with Lord Jamar and Godfrey, where they discuss hip-hop and current events. Despite industry setbacks, Rah Digga continues to influence hip-hop and her community.
