Cowgirls and cowboys, it’s time to giddy on up because Kevin Costner is officially heading back to the Wild West! That’s right, the History Channel recently announced that the Yellowstone star is hosting and directing a brand new docuseries entitled Kevin Costner’s The West.
Below, we have everything you need to know about the actor’s latest project, including when you can expect to watch it at home! Read on for more.
What to know about ‘Kevin Costner’s The West’
The History Channel announced Kevin Costner’s The West on Tuesday, April 15. The award-winning actor will serve as host and executive producer alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.
The show will take “viewers on an epic journey through the birth of the American West,” looking at the contest over land that defines so much of the country’s western region.
Costner, who has been known to pursue projects aligning with his historical interests, will further look at “legends” in history such as examining the relentless competition for land, power, and identity that forged our nation’s Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea as well as “the clashes between lawmen and outlaws, the rise of cowboys and ranchers, the resilience of trailblazing women, and the fervor of fortune seekers and abolitionists, this series spans a century of pivotal events.”
“The series highlights pivotal battles and iconic figures, from Chief Little Turtle’s decisive victory over the U.S.
Army, sparking General ‘Mad’ Anthony Wayne’s counteroffensive and the inexorable push westward, to the tenacious stands of the Blackfeet, Comanche and Lakota Sioux tribes and by warriors like Red Cloud and Crazy Horse, as well as the storied vigilante Joaquin Murrieta,” the show’s press release revealed.
“Blending powerful historical archive, striking visuals and insightful expert interviews with globally recognized historians, each episode highlights a crucial and often tragic chapter in the rich tapestry of the West.”
‘Kevin Costner’s The West’ release date

Does ‘Kevin Costner’s The West ‘connect to ‘Yellowstone?’

Despite Kevin Costner’s The West being all about life on the range, that doesn’t necessarily mean the actor will be returning to the Yellowstone universe anytime soon. In fact, since Costner’s character John Dutton III died in Season 5 of the show, the return would be quite shocking indeed.
“I would love to go back under the right circumstances. I think that all of us want to,” Costner told the TODAY show at the time of his departure. “For me, it really needs to be the right circumstances. There’s always a chance. I love the thing. You’ve got to be really clear about that.”
One of the ways that people think Costner can come back is if he appears in a flashback sequence in either the Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler(Cole Hauser) spin-off or the Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) spin-off.
This type of cameo has happened in Yellowstone with John’s dad, John Dutton II (Dabney Coleman), and his late wife, Evelyn (Gretchen Mol), so who knows! It could happen again! Or maybe some of his Yellowstone co-stars will appear in Kevin Costner’s The West.
