Benjamin “BeBe” Winans, celebrated as one half of the legendary gospel duo BeBe & CeCe Winans, has left an indelible mark on gospel and contemporary Christian music.

His deep baritone voice and heartfelt songwriting have inspired millions. Yet, behind the acclaim, BeBe’s life has included significant struggles, both professional and personal, including publicized challenges within his marriage.

Born in 1962 in Detroit, Michigan, BeBe was raised in the renowned Winans family, whose influence on gospel music is unmatched.

Growing up in a household where faith and music were central, BeBe and his siblings were nurtured to pursue both spiritual and musical excellence. This strong foundation propelled BeBe and his sister CeCe to stardom in the 1980s

. Their breakthrough came as background vocalists on the PTL Club, leading to their debut album in 1987. The album’s fusion of traditional gospel with contemporary R&B broadened their appeal and produced hits like “I.O.U. Me” and “Heaven.”

Their success continued with albums such as “Heaven” (1988), “Different Lifestyles” (1991), and “Relationships” (1994), earning chart-topping singles and numerous awards.

However, the pressures of constant touring, industry demands, and maintaining a public image took a toll on both siblings. Creative differences emerged, with BeBe’s ambitious drive sometimes clashing with CeCe’s more reserved approach.

These tensions, compounded by the challenges of working closely with family, eventually led the duo to take a break in 1995 to pursue solo careers.

For BeBe, this break was a chance to explore his artistry and spiritual journey independently. His solo debut in 1997 was well received, and he released several more successful albums, experimenting with themes ranging from love and relationships to social justice.

Despite his flourishing solo career, BeBe faced personal tragedies, including the loss of his brother Ronald in 2005—a devastating event for the entire Winans family.

BeBe’s personal life was further complicated by his marriage to Deborah Denise Winans (now Morton), whom he wed in 1987. The marriage, initially filled with love and mutual respect, became strained over time due to BeBe’s demanding career and the pressures of public life.

Deborah often felt overshadowed and struggled with the scrutiny that came with being married to a gospel star.

The challenges of balancing family responsibilities and fame eventually led to a breaking point. In 2009, during a custody dispute, Deborah accused BeBe of domestic violence, resulting in his arrest and a highly publicized court case. Although the charges were dropped, the incident left a lasting impact on both their lives.

BeBe later acknowledged mistakes and spoke about lessons learned, while Deborah shared her own struggles with the emotional toll of their relationship.

In 2009, BeBe and CeCe reunited for the album “Still,” their first collaboration in 15 years. The album’s success, including two Grammy Awards, marked both a professional and personal reconciliation for the siblings.
