The View’: Whoopi Goldberg Urges Successor to Continue Pope Francis’ Legacy of Acceptance
On the latest episode of The View, emotions ran high as the cohosts dedicated significant time to reflect on the passing of Pope Francis.
The panel, led by Whoopi Goldberg, took the opportunity to honor the late pontiff’s legacy and discuss the future of the Catholic Church, emphasizing the importance of continuing his message of acceptance and compassion.
Whoopi Goldberg, who has previously spoken about her personal encounter with Pope Francis, was visibly moved as she addressed the audience. “Yesterday was a tough day,” Goldberg began, her voice tinged with sadness.
“Pope Francis, who I believe was one of the great popes, passed away just hours after delivering a very timely Easter message at the Vatican.” She went on to recount how the pope’s final words urged people to embrace those who are different or come from other lands, reminding the world that “we are all children of God.”
Goldberg’s admiration for Pope Francis was echoed by her fellow cohost, Sara Haines, who described him as the “most Jesus-like” pope in recent memory.
“When you read about Jesus—his words and the way he walked among people—this is what I think of when I think of Pope Francis,” Haines said. She praised the late pope for his humility, his willingness to reach out to marginalized communities, and his efforts to modernize the church’s approach to social issues.
The conversation quickly turned to the future of the Catholic Church and the qualities the next pope should embody. Goldberg was clear in her hopes for the next leader of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics.
“I hope the cardinals choose someone who will continue the legacy of acceptance and love that Pope Francis championed,” she said. “We need a pope who doesn’t just talk about inclusion, but lives it—someone who understands that the church must be a place for everyone.”
The cohosts discussed some of the challenges Pope Francis faced during his papacy, including resistance from more conservative factions within the church.
Despite these obstacles, the late pope was known for his progressive stances on issues such as climate change, economic inequality, and the treatment of refugees and LGBTQ+ individuals. “He wasn’t afraid to speak out for what he believed was right,” noted cohost Sunny Hostin. “That kind of courage is rare, and it’s what made him so beloved by so many.”
As the segment came to a close, Goldberg reiterated her call for a successor who would not only honor Pope Francis’ memory but also push the church forward. “The world is changing, and the church has to change with it,” she said. “Let’s hope the next pope can build on what Francis started and continue to open the doors wider for everyone.”
The View’s heartfelt tribute captured the sense of loss felt by millions around the globe, while also shining a light on the enduring impact of Pope Francis’ message of acceptance, compassion, and unity.
