The actress commemorated the anniversary of her one-woman show on Broadway for New York Magazine‘s “Yesteryear” issue.
Whoopi Goldberg is celebrating a long and fruitful career — and she’s also getting the chance to relive a moment that will forever stand out for her.
New York Magazine released the outlet’s annual “Yesteryear” issue on April 7, which celebrated some of the biggest Broadway stars reminiscing about their first times on the Great White Way. With a plethora of famous faces (like Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, Lin-Manuel Miranda and more) posing for the glitzy spread, Whoopi was on hand to commemorate her one-woman Broadway show that ran from 1984 to 1985.
Given how that project jumpstarted a decades-long career for her, it was only fitting that The View would celebrate the occasion by sharing her cover with audiences on April 8. What’s more, the show’s social team made sure to let their Instagram followers partake in the moment by sharing the news on Instagram.
“Bravo, @WhoopiGoldberg! 👏,” the show proudly wrote in the caption.
When fans saw that Whoopi was going back down memory lane for an incredible honor, they were so excited to see this happen for her.

“I love her. People really have forgotten the trail she blazed early in her career. Put some responsibility on Ms Whoopi’s name and legacy,” one person wrote in the comments. “Awesome! Well deserved! Congratulations Whoopi! 🙌❤️,” another exclaimed. “Definitely a LEGEND @whoopigoldberg 🥂,” a different follower added.
As some may remember, Whoopi’s original Broadway stint saw her playing multiple characters in her one-woman show. Originally produced at the Dance Theater Workshop, the show eventually made its way to the big stage after a New York Times critic came and reviewed the project for the paper. This led to late film and theater director Mike Nichols bringing the show to Broadway, and it began the start of an incredible journey for her.
“[Mike] opened the world to me,” she told the outlet. “He’d say, ‘I’m having lunch with Paul, Carl, and Steve,’ and then I walk in and think to myself, Oh my God, that’s Paul Simon, Carl Reiner, and Steve Martin. I got to spend time with these folks and really talk about their art — if Mike Nichols brought me in, I know I’m good. That was important, because people haven’t always understood why I am where I am. ‘How did you get here? Why you?’ Because somebody thought I was good enough.”
Congrats Whoopi — we’re so proud!
