On an ordinary night in April 2007, Jermaine Jackson received a phone call from his brother Michael. Michael’s voice was uncharacteristically subdued, carrying a weight Jermaine could not immediately name.
Michael asked for a few minutes to share something he had kept secret for over a decade – a story that would reveal the deeply human heart behind the King of Pop.
Michael recounted the events of 1996, when he abruptly canceled several shows in Europe. While the world speculated about exhaustion or illness, Michael had never explained the real reason.

That year, he received a letter from a terminally ill boy named Daniel in Liverpool. Daniel’s mother had sold her car to buy tickets for Michael’s concert, hoping it would be her son’s last adventure. However, Daniel’s health deteriorated, and he was unable to make the trip. The letter wasn’t a request for tickets, but a simple thank you for the happiness Michael’s music brought to Daniel during his most painful days.
Moved by the letter, Michael canceled his shows and traveled to Liverpool in secret. Disguised and alone, he entered St. Mary’s Hospital and met Daniel’s mother, Susan, who confessed to writing the letter on her son’s behalf. Michael spent time with Daniel, talking, singing, and sharing stories. For five days, he visited the hospital, bringing comfort and joy to the boy who idolized him.
During their conversations, Daniel asked Michael if he was ever afraid. Michael admitted he was – afraid of not being good enough, of disappointing people, of being forgotten. Daniel reminded him that courage wasn’t the absence of fear, but doing something important despite it.

On the last day, Daniel, growing weaker, asked Michael to keep their encounter a secret. He didn’t want anyone to think Michael’s kindness was for publicity.
Daniel’s final words to Michael were profound: “Being remembered isn’t about how many people know your name. It’s about making a difference in at least one person’s life.” Daniel passed away soon after, and Michael attended the small, private funeral, keeping the promise to never speak of it.
Years later, in 2007, Michael finally shared the story with Jermaine, explaining that Daniel had healed him in ways no stage ever could. He asked Jermaine to share the story one day, so the world would know that beneath the fame, he was a man who loved deeply and made a difference when no one was watching.
After Michael’s death in 2009, Jermaine kept the secret for years, waiting for the right moment. In 2019, during a documentary interview, he finally revealed the story.
The world was moved, and Susan Matthews, Daniel’s mother, found comfort knowing her son’s legacy lived on. Inspired by Michael’s gesture, the Heal the World Foundation launched the Daniel Project, connecting terminally ill children with their idols for genuine, private moments of joy.
Today, the Daniel Project has granted hundreds of wishes, and Susan Matthews serves as its ambassador. Jermaine remembers Michael not just as the King of Pop, but as a man who understood that true legacy is measured in kindness, not applause.
The story of Michael and Daniel endures as a testament to the power of compassion, reminding us that some of the greatest acts of love happen away from the spotlight.
