Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig faced huge Oscar snubs for their respective categories, Whoopi Goldberg explained the snub.

Barbie has been one of the most hyped and successful movies of 2023, not just with box office numbers, but in terms of accolades as well. The movie shined in every aspect of other award ceremonies, but as the 96th Oscar nominations were unveiled, two great snubs shocked many fans.

The buzz surrounding the movie remained. However, director Greta Gerwig and lead star of the movie, Margot Robbie, were missing from the list of accolades. Now, legendary actor Whoopi Goldberg addressed the ever-evolving uproar. Still, Barbie has an astounding eight nominations, including Ryan Gosling’s best actor in a supporting role and the movie’s best picture nod.

Whoopi Goldberg’s Comments on Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s Oscar Snub

Whoopi Goldberg’s comments on any Oscars-related issues matter as the actor and comedian has been a veteran with her long-time involvement with the Academy. For context, Goldberg hosted the ceremony four times and also served as an Academy board member.

The actor also won an Oscar for her performance in Jerry Zucker’s 1990 romance thriller Ghost.

Now, following the snub of Greta Gerwig’s best director and Margot Robbie’s best actress nods, Goldberg addressed the uproar. “Everybody doesn’t win,” Goldberg told The View (via, Entertainment Weekly), adding, “You don’t get everything you want to get.”

“There are no snubs. That’s what you have to keep in mind: Not everybody gets a prize, and it is subjective. Movies are subjective. The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting.”

Following the $1.4 billion global box office gross, Barbie entered the race in several awards, and Gerwig and Robbie were commonly seen in the nods for their respective categories.

However, the actor/director duo is not completely out of the race as Gerwig secured a nod for screenwriting while Robbie, being one of the producers, makes her a part of the best picture nod.

For fans, it has been one of the greatest omissions of Oscar nominations of the year. The same goes with Robbie’s Barbie co-stars Ryan Gosling and America Ferrara, who secured the nods for best supporting actor and actress, respectively.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius,” the Ken actor wrote in a statement (via Variety). “To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.

Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film,” he added.

For Ferrara, Greta has “done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” she told  Variety, advocating the director. Creating this world, she added, “taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing not to see her on that list.” 

Ferrara played the role of Gloria in the film and marveled fans with her performance. Barbie is streaming on Max and available for digital rent on the video-on-demand platforms.
