From Child Star to Mystery—Where Did Vanessa Chester Disappear To? The Truth Will Stun You!
Vanessa Lee Chester’s story is a Hollywood rarity: a young actress who soared to stardom, survived the industry’s turbulence, and crafted a life and career on her own terms.
Born in Brooklyn in 1984, Vanessa was the first in her family born in America after her parents emigrated from Guyana. The family moved to Los Angeles, where Vanessa’s charisma quickly landed her commercial work and, by age eight, her television debut on *Hanging with Mr. Cooper*.

Her breakthrough came at age nine when she was cast as Becky in Alfonso Cuarón’s *A Little Princess*. Vanessa’s performance broke barriers: Becky was a fully realized character, not a stereotype, and her friendship with Sarah (Liesel Matthews) was treated as equal. Seeing a young Black girl in a period fantasy with agency and a happy ending was revolutionary for 1995.
Recognition followed, and at the film’s premiere, Steven Spielberg told Vanessa, “You’re a great actress. I’m going to put you in a movie someday.” True to his word, Spielberg cast her in *The Lost World: Jurassic Park* (1997) as Kelly Curtis Malcolm, Jeff Goldblum’s daughter. At just 12, Vanessa became the first Black girl co-starring in the Jurassic franchise, and her character made history—Kelly is the only person in the series to defeat a dinosaur using only her own athleticism, not weapons.

Vanessa’s time on *The Lost World* was surreal. She did most of her own stunts and cherished the camaraderie with co-stars and crew. The film was a global blockbuster, and Vanessa’s action figure was a dream come true. She earned Saturn and NAACP Image Award nominations, and at 13, was a bona fide movie star.
But instead of chasing fame, Vanessa pivoted toward education. She enrolled at USC, graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science and a minor in business. She returned to TV with roles on *Malcolm in the Middle*, *The West Wing*, and *Veronica Mars*, building her career methodically and privately.
Behind the scenes, Vanessa faced personal loss. In February 2025, her childhood friend and *Harriet the Spy* co-star Michelle Trachtenberg passed away. Vanessa’s heartfelt tribute on Instagram highlighted the deep bond they shared beyond Hollywood’s spotlight.
Vanessa’s evolution extended to filmmaking’s other sides: she worked in wardrobe, makeup, and art departments, becoming a true multi-hyphenate. In 2023, she returned to her Jurassic roots in the comedy-horror *Invisible Raptor*, playing DJ Malcolm—a nod to her iconic role. She embraced the chance to die on camera for the first time, relishing new challenges and special effects.
Her recent projects include *Napa Boys* (2025 Toronto International Film Festival), *Six Feet Apart*, and *The Errand*, spanning comedy, drama, and horror. Vanessa chooses roles that excite her inner child, focusing on creativity and authenticity rather than celebrity or wealth.
Now single and with a net worth around $2 million, Vanessa continues to inspire. She’s proof that child stars can grow into grounded, passionate adults, maintaining their love for storytelling. Spielberg saw her spark at age nine; Vanessa spent her career honoring that promise while remaining true to herself. When creativity calls, Vanessa Chester always answers.
