Rumors are swirling again that Toni Braxton is still not over the way Oprah Winfrey treated her on national television. Many believe Oprah didn’t just humiliate Toni during their infamous interview, but also sabotaged her career.

Recently, Toni has been vocal about the long-lasting impact of that moment, once again exposing Oprah’s harshness and lack of empathy.

Toni Braxton, a Grammy-winning singer with over 70 million albums sold worldwide, faced severe financial troubles despite her success.

She filed for bankruptcy twice, first in the late 1990s after her record label paid her less than 35 cents per album, and again in 2010 due to health issues including lupus, which forced her to cancel a lucrative Las Vegas show.

These financial struggles were compounded by lawsuits, medical bills, and tax debts, with Toni at one point owing nearly half a million dollars to the IRS and California tax board.

During her lowest moments, Toni agreed to an interview with Oprah, hoping it would help clear her name and generate some sympathy. Instead, she was blindsided by Oprah’s judgmental and condescending questions.

Oprah grilled Toni about her spending habits, asking if she really had Gucci flatware and a lion skin rug, and comparing herself by saying, “I’m Oprah Winfrey and I don’t have Gucci flatware.”

Toni later said she had no idea Gucci even made silverware, and that Oprah’s comments made her feel small, embarrassed, and deeply hurt.

Instead of offering support, Oprah seemed to blame Toni for her financial woes, focusing on her alleged extravagance rather than the unfair contracts and industry practices that left Toni underpaid.

Toni has since revealed that the interview changed her career for the worse, making people look down on her and damaging her reputation. She felt that Oprah, someone she admired and looked up to, used the platform to reprimand her rather than uplift her.

Allegations have also surfaced that Oprah warned Toni’s record label before the interview, tipping them off about Toni’s intentions and further isolating her.

Many fans and fellow celebrities, including Mo’Nique, have since criticized Oprah for projecting her own insecurities onto Toni and using her influence to tear down other Black women in the industry.

Toni has explained that her bankruptcies were not the result of frivolous spending, but due to exploitative contracts and the burden of supporting her entire family financially.

She often had to pay for her tours, band, and crew out of her own pocket, while her label refused to cover the costs. On top of that, her medical expenses from lupus piled up. The so-called luxury items, like the Gucci flatware, were rare treats for herself—hardly the cause of her financial issues.

To this day, Toni is said to still feel betrayed by Oprah and hopes for a public apology. Many believe Oprah’s interview shifted the narrative away from the real issue of artist exploitation and instead blamed Toni for her hardships.

Fans continue to debate whether Oprah owes Toni an apology, and whether she has a pattern of putting down Black talent rather than supporting them.
