If you are a fan of the Taylor Sheridan universe, then you know that he loves to reuse actors and connect shows to one another—case in point: Yellowstone188319231944The Madison and 6666 (pronounced “four sixes”).

But what about the writer’s other projects—specifically his Texas-based oil drama Landman?

How does that drama-filled saga connect to the Yellowstone universe, and is there a chance that we could get a crossover between the Norris family (Landman) and the Dutton family (Yellowstone)? We look into it below!

What is ‘Landman’ about?

Landman Season 1 aired in 2024, and starred Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, Jacob Lofland, Paulina Chávez, Kayla Wallace, Mark Collie, James Jordan, Demi Moore, Jon Hamm and Colm Feore. It was created and written by Sheridan, who lives in Texas, where the show takes place.

The plot follows Tommy Norris (Thornton) as he tries to make his oil company the best in the business despite all of the outside and inside factors working against him.

“I hope people take away the fact that when you’re in an intense, big, dangerous business like that, it affects you personally, and it affects your family, your friends, all the people you work with,” Thornton told Country Living in November 2024.

“It’s a big world and a world that’s also easy to get obsessed with. It’s gambling, really, in so many ways—every day is a gamble, and I’m the guy who goes and places the bets and certainly collects them to turn over.”

Landman is currently filming Season 2, and the entire cast, minus Hamm, is expected to return.

All about the ‘Yellowstone’ universe

Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe is the thing that made him a household name. It started with Yellowstone, which followed John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) as he defends his Montana-based ranch—Yellowstone Dutton Ranch—against modern-day issues like capitalism, gentrification, tourism and more.

“When it was first pitched to me by Taylor, it was one season and [like] a long movie, which [is] speaking my language,” Costner told People in June 2024. “But ultimately, I think what happened was the studio didn’t want that. And because he’s such a prolific writer, he said, ‘I can do that. I can make a series that goes on.’”

Following the success of Yellowstone, Sheridan created 1883, which ran for one season in 2021 and showed viewers how the Dutton family ended up in Montana.

“I’m a huge Western fan. I went back and watched all the Clint Eastwood movies before we started shooting, and then knowing that we’re going to work with Sam Elliott — that was probably the most nerve-wracking,” star Tim McGraw told The Hollywood Reporter in June 2022.

“You walk on and you’re doing a scene with Sam Elliott, and he’s looking at you like, ‘All right, show me what you got.’ I’m grateful and humbled to be able to do that and be a part of this production.”

Then, Sheridan decided to make another prequel set in 1923 entitled—you guessed it—1923. It starred Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, with the plot following the Duttons in Montana in the 1920s.

“I think what Taylor Sheridan [the show’s creator] does so brilliantly through his female characters [is] all of them have incredible agency and presence in the story,” Mirren said in a clip revealed exclusively by Woman’s World in March.

“He doesn’t use false methods to get these women to be strong. They are legitimately and authentically within the world that they live in.”

Along with these three shows, Sheridan is working to produce 1944The Madison6666, a Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) spin-off and a Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) spin-off. Details as to plots and release dates for all these remain pretty under wraps for now.

Does ‘Landman’ connect to ‘Yellowstone’?

Currently, there is no official word on whether the two shows connect, but there are a lot of casting crossovers.

First, you have Randolph, who plays Elizabeth Dutton in 1923 and Ainsley Norris in Landman. Then you have James Jordan, who was on Yellowstone, before heading down to Texas. Most recently, it was announced that 1883’s Sam Elliott would be joining the cast for Season 2, reuniting him with Thornton, who was in one episode of the prequel show.

As of now, none of the Landman cast’s previous roles are related to their Yellowstone ones, but it is a Sheridan project and he loves plot twists, so that might all change in Season 2.

Another connection could be that since one of the Yellowstone spin-off shows, 6666, is also expected to take place in Texas, that might pave the way for a potential crossover.
