In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the 34-year-old actor reflected on his role as the iconic Spencer Dutton and his thoughts on potentially reprising the character in the upcoming series. In 1923, the first prequel to Yellowstone, Brandon took on the role of Spencer who was the younger son of James and Margaret Dutton.
Spencer was a solider-turned-hunter who was known for his masculine and fiercely protective and gruff nature. After experiencing the horrors of war, Spencer has dealt with his problems through heavy drinking and hunting.
In the series, Brandon’s complicated character navigates power struggles and conflicts on the family ranch in Montana.
Speaking on his thoughts on continuing Spencer’s story in the future 20 years into the future, Brandon jokingly told the news outlet: “Give me some gout, a little hunch and some salt and pepper. I’ll gravel the voice up a bit. If it comes around, I’d love to do it. I really would. I definitely don’t want to say goodbye to Spencer. I love that guy.”

After playing the character of Spencer for three years and a total of 16 episodes, Brandon has reflected on his experience and expressed his gratitude for the chance to portray such an interesting, complex character. He shared: “It was incredibly emotional for a number of reasons. I was closing the book on that chapter of my life and then I was processing the last three years and the effect that it’s had on me. It was emotional, but not necessarily sad.”
He continued: “There’s a lot of energy moving through you when you culminate something that significant in your life. And then when you tack on what Spencer’s dealing with in the story and the loss and the regret. It’s very painful that he’ll never get to carry out the amount of love that he has.”
The second Yellowstone prequel series ‘1944’ will follow the Dutton family’s experience on the Yellowstone ranch during World War II. The prequel series will be set two decades after the end of 1923, exploring the later years of the Dutton family.
