The 1923 Season 2 finale was a happy yet heartbreaking ending for the Dutton family, and it has made one aspect of Yellowstone even more heartwarming.

Season 2 was an extremely difficult ride for the Dutton family, especially brutal for the couple of the family. The family has to defend the Yellowstone ranch against a war waged by Donald Whitfield (played by Timothy Dalton) and Banner Creighton (played by Jerome Flynn).

Even though the family won this war in the finale, after Spencer Dutton comes back home, there are two tragedies in this season. These tragedies in 1923 Season 2, however heartbreaking by themselves, have helped make an aspect of Yellowstone even more special.

The Tragic Fate of the Duttons in 1923 Season 2 made Yellowstone even more special

The war waged on the Yellowstone ranch had a tragic end for the Duttons in 1923 Season 2. They win the war, but there are two heartbreaking losses.

Spencer loses his wife, Alexandra, as she refuses to have an amputation surgery that she needs to live, in order to give birth to their child. So, even though Spencer saves her from freezing to death, she only stays alive long enough to give birth to their child.

Additionally, Jack Dutton also dies a horrific death in the penultimate episode of 1923 Season 2 after he is killed by Clyde. Jack’s death leaves his wife, Elizabeth, widowed and their love story at a tragic and abrupt end.

The fact that two of the main couples suffered a tragic fate in the 1923 Season 2 finale makes Beth & Rip’s love story in Yellowstone even more special.

The Yellowstone creator built Beth and Rip’s love story to stand the test of fate as well as time. Their romance was never the easiest, but it lasts and comes together throughout the five seasons of Yellowstone. The beauty of their relationship is made even more special by the fact that it survived the tragedies that life threw their way.

The audience is appreciative of the fact that creator Taylor Sheridan’s star couple was not destined for the same fate as the Duttons in 1923 Season 2.

Alexandra and Jack’s deaths aren’t the first time Sheridan’s Yellowstone romances have faced a tragic end. In the prequel to Yellowstone, we find out about Elsa Dutton, James and Margaret Dutton’s daughter, who dies on their Oregon Trail journey.

Her death cut short her love affair with Sam (played by Martin Sensmeier). Even James dies after he is shot, as shown in a flashback, tragically ending the love story of the first-known members of the Dutton family tree.

Beth and Rip’s love story has survived the five seasons and the finale of Yellowstone, and they’ve even been given a spin-off series titled Dutton Ranch that they will lead.

The spin-off will test their relationship with even more challenges and conflicts, so only time will tell if Beth’s intelligence and Rip’s grit will continue to save them from the tragic fate of so many that have come before them.
