Cole Hauser Reveals Why He Left Yellowstone and What’s Next for Him
As “Yellowstone” wrapped filming its final episodes in May 2024, fans everywhere felt the sting of saying goodbye to Rip Wheeler, the brooding cowboy brought to life by Cole Hauser.
With the much-anticipated Beth and Rip spin-off still in limbo and its theme undecided, the sadness of Rip’s departure only deepens. Yet, Cole Hauser isn’t ready to hang up his cowboy hat just yet—instead, he’s blazing a new trail, this time as an actor, producer, and writer.
Right after “Yellowstone” ended, Cole wasted no time jumping into a new project. But instead of another scripted TV role, he leaned into his cowboy persona in a different way—by directing and starring in a cinematic ad for the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) League.
This wasn’t just any commercial; it was a four-minute tribute to the spirit of Americana and the modern cowboy, premiering at the 2024 PBR World Finals in Fort Worth, Texas. Cole spent four months crafting the project, which drew a massive live audience and allowed him to showcase a side of himself fans rarely see: not just Rip Wheeler, but also a storyteller, director, and advocate for cowboy culture.
In a recent interview, Cole explained his passion for the PBR and the cowboy way of life, saying, “Anybody who jumps on a bull is going to have not only talent but courage.” His respect for the athletes and the sport is evident, and he sees this as more than just a paycheck—it’s a meaningful project that speaks to his heart.
Even as he branches out, the possibility of a Beth and Rip spin-off with co-star Kelly Reilly remains on his mind. While Paramount hasn’t confirmed any details and rumors have swirled, Cole’s emotional investment in Rip’s journey is clear. He admitted that not having the original cast around is tough, especially since he’s formed real friendships over the years.
Still, he and Kelly Reilly have focused on the relationship between Rip and Beth, pondering what adventures might await them if a spin-off ever comes to fruition.
Cole’s connection to Rip Wheeler runs deep. When he first read the “Yellowstone” pilot, Rip was a minor character, but Cole saw untapped potential. Working closely with show creator Taylor Sheridan, he helped shape Rip into the beloved, complex figure fans adore today.
Off-screen, Cole is a dad of three living in Florida, but he acknowledges that the physical demands of cowboy life—and aging—can be tough. “You’re sore for those weeks, you’re beat up a little bit because I’m getting older,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Cole is determined to carve out his own path. He revealed plans to create, executive produce, direct, and star in his own television show—an exciting prospect that gives him more creative control than ever before.
If the Beth and Rip spin-off doesn’t materialize soon, Cole seems ready to devote himself to these new projects.
Despite the shadow of “Yellowstone” looming large, Cole isn’t running from Rip Wheeler. Instead, he’s evolving with the character, channeling that same energy into new ventures. He’s also passionate about supporting women and underrepresented groups in Western spaces, as seen in his recent work with the PBR.
For fans, the end of “Yellowstone” may be bittersweet, but Cole Hauser’s journey as a cowboy—and as a creative force—is far from over. Whether or not Rip returns, Cole is ready to write his own legend.
