Whew! Marvin Sapp Breaks Silence After $40,000 Church Donation Request Sparks Outrage On Social Media
Roommates, Marvin Sapp has dropped a response after resurfaced footage shows him asking his church congregation to contribute to his fundraising goal of $40,000. The video sparked outrage on social media, causing the preacher to step up from behind the pulpit to address the folks who felt a way about his BIG request.
Marvin Sapp took to Facebook with a long statement, breaking down why he challenged churchgoers and online viewers to help him raise $40,000. For context, TMZ confirmed that the resurfaced clip came from Sapp’s 2024 PAW Convention in Baltimore back in July.
The ‘Never Would’ve Made It’ singer explained that he also made a major contribution after asking folks from his congregation for $20 donations and his leadership for $100. Marvin also stated that the short clip on social media led folks to jump to conclusions without knowing the full story. He explained that the conference had set budgets, and he was just doing his part to help raise the funds.
“Conferences have budgets. Churches have budgets. And people have budgets. As the assigned ministerial gift for this international gathering, one of my responsibilities was to help raise the conference budget. That’s not manipulation, it’s stewardship,” Marvin Sapp wrote.
As for telling ushers to close the doors, Marvin made it clear he wasn’t trying to hold anyone hostage. He explained that closing the doors during offering time is a common practice to protect people’s vulnerability and avoid distractions.
“The truth is, when finances are being received in any worship gathering, it is one of the most vulnerable and exposed times for both the finance and security teams. Movement during this sacred exchange can be distracting and, at times, even risky. My directive was not about control it was about creating a safe, focused, and reverent environment for those choosing to give, and for those handling the resources,” Sapp continued.
Furthermore, Marvin Sapp continued to insist that his major request wasn’t unbiblical and actually aligned with Scripture.
“So when someone challenges people to give a specific amount, it is not unbiblical. It is not manipulation. It is in order. It is consistent with Scripture.”
