At age 39, Russell Wilson, star quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and his wife, singer Ciara, are navigating a profoundly difficult time after the loss of their beloved dog, Prince.

Just days after the Steelers’ elimination from the NFL playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens, Wilson shared the heartbreaking news on social media, posting a touching photo of himself, Ciara, and Prince.

The announcement marked the end of a 12-year journey with his loyal Great Dane, who had been by his side since his rookie year in the NFL.

“Prince, 12 years ago you arrived into my life. I received you my rookie year and you have been a treasure to our family with so many memories, hugs, and kisses from our four kids and us.

He recounted Prince’s resilience, having twice battled cancer and living a full 12 years—far surpassing the average lifespan for his breed. “You fought cancer two times and lived 12 years while most live six. The loss is especially poignant for Wilson, as his relationship with Prince began during a pivotal year—2012—when he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks and adjusting to life in professional football.
